According to a nationwide poll of voters conducted by Public Opinion Strategies for the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform, voters expressed strong frustration with the current lawsuit system. They want elected officials to pass common-sense legal reforms. For example:
83% of voters said the number of lawsuits is a serious problem.
73% of voters want the incoming Congress to reform the lawsuit system-including 71% of Democrats, 78% of Republicans and 73% of independents.
These are landslide numbers by any standard. Americans are clearly fed up with a lawsuit system that costs two to three times more than lawsuit systems in other developed countries. Congressional leaders also understand the need for legal reform. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed this week, soon-to-be Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) made legal reform a top agenda item for the new Congress. This is welcome news. Legal reform is a key ingredient in a growing, job-creating economy.
