Princess Samantha Kennedy Says Several Of Film’s Scenes Taken From Her Book
SAN DIEGO — An Imperial Beach woman filed a federal lawsuit last Friday against Paramount Pictures, claiming several ideas used in the popular 1997 film „Titanic“ were stolen from a novel she had written years earlier.
„Titanic“ is currently the second largest grossing film of all time, with more than $2 billion in worldwide revenue. The film is being re-released in 3-D in theaters April 4.
Princess Samatha Kennedy filed a 16-page handwritten lawsuit in federal court last week, detailing how James Cameron and Paramount used several of her ideas as inspiration for dozens of the film’s most famous scenes, including the scene when Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) sketched a nude Rose (Kate Winslet) in her quarters.“I’ve cried many, many times, I even got sick in the last year,“ Kennedy said. „You know, I think they’ve done me wrong.“Other scenes Kennedy said were stolen include one of the first in the film, when Jack won a ticket to board the Titanic, as well as the scene when Jack and Rose made out in a car in the ship’s cargo hold.“I have 480 pages of side-by-side comparisons between my copyrighted work and the motion picture,“ Kennedy said. When asked why she had not come forward during the 15 years following the film’s release, she replied, „I haven’t been to a theater since 1994 or ’95.“She said around the time „Titanic“ was originally released, her father had passed away and she was too wrapped up in the tragedy to contemplate seeing any movies. When Kennedy finally did see the film many years later, she said she immediately noticed the parallels.“I saw the movie in the last year and was pretty surprised,“ she said. „I started seeing a lot of similarities.“Kennedy, who admitted her claims might sound a bit crazy, said Paramount stole much of the novel through the process of legal discovery, because she’d been suing the studio about another matter. She said she has letters from Paramount showing the studio’s request for her material during the discovery process.10News asked to see the letters, as well as the pages in her novel which she claims match scenes in „Titanic,“ but Kennedy said they were all in storage in Oceanside. The case will be handled by a federal judge, who will decide whether or not it has enough merit to move forward.
